Cruise Planning FAQs

Planning a cruise can get overwhelming fast. There are dozens of cruise lines, ships, itineraries, cabin categories, fare types, and plenty of opinions about which one is supposedly “best.” The truth is, there usually isn’t one best option. There’s the option that makes the most sense for you.

These are some of the questions I hear most often as travelers start sorting through their choices.

Working With Storied Tides

  • A lot more than make the reservation.

I help you figure out what to book in the first place — which cruise line, ship, itinerary, cabin, fare, and surrounding travel make the most sense for you.

That surrounding travel can be as simple as flights, a hotel, and transfers before or after the cruise, or it can become a real extension of the trip — several days exploring Rome before a Mediterranean sailing, time in Athens after the cruise, an Alaska land experience, or another destination that adds something meaningful to the journey.

Once we book, I also guide you through what comes next: payments, excursions, onboard packages, hotels, transfers, check-in, documents, and the other details that start piling up between booking day and departure.

  • If you already know the exact cruise, ship, cabin, and fare you want, booking directly may feel pretty straightforward.

The bigger value of an advisor comes when you’re still figuring out which cruise you should book — and how the rest of the trip should come together around it.

A cruise line can help you book its own ship. I can step back and look at different cruise lines and options with you, then help think through the rest of the journey too: flights, pre- or post-cruise hotels, transfers, arrival timing, and other logistics that can make or break the experience.

You still make the final decision. My job is to help you make it with better information and a more complete view of the trip.

  • Absolutely.

Sometimes the premium option really is worth the extra money, and I’ll tell you why.

    Sometimes it isn’t.

If Royal Caribbean is a better match for your family than a more premium line, I’m going to tell you Royal Caribbean. If spending more will noticeably improve something you care about, I’ll tell you that too.

I’m not trying to get you into the most expensive trip. I’m trying to get you into the right trip.

  • No. I often work with premium and luxury options, but there’s no required cruise line or price tier for working with Storied Tides.

Royal Caribbean might be exactly right for one trip. Celebrity, Princess, Viking, Regent, or a river cruise might be right for another.

The label matters a lot less to me than whether the experience makes sense for you.

  • We talk. It’s a conversation, not a questionnaire read aloud.

I’ll ask questions about who is traveling, what you want the vacation to feel like, your budget, what you enjoy doing, what you want to avoid, past trips you’ve loved or disliked, and anything else that helps me understand what “right” looks like for you.

I schedule enough time that we don’t have to rush, but that doesn’t mean we’ll necessarily need the entire appointment.

  • No.

You might know the exact sailing you want. You might know you want Europe but have no idea whether that means the Mediterranean, a river cruise, or something else. You might just know you want warm weather in February.

    That’s okay.

Part of my job can be helping you narrow that down.

What I do need is a willingness to make decisions once we’ve identified the strongest options. Thoughtful refinement is part of planning. Once we’ve narrowed the choices to strong options, I’ll help you weigh the tradeoffs so we can move forward confidently instead of continuing to add possibilities that aren’t getting us any closer to the right decision.

Planning, Timing & Value

  • Earlier is usually better, especially if your dates aren’t flexible or you care about a particular cabin, ship, itinerary, or school-break week.

Early booking generally gives us more choices.

That doesn’t mean every cruise needs to be booked two years ahead, and it doesn’t mean prices can never drop later. But waiting for the “perfect deal” can sometimes cost you the cabin or itinerary you actually wanted.

  • Absolutely.

You don’t have to come to me with a completely blank slate.

In fact, sometimes the most useful conversation starts with, “I’ve narrowed it down to these three and I can’t tell which one is better.”

Great. Let’s look at them together.

I can help you compare the ships, itineraries, cabins, inclusions, price differences, and overall experience — and, more importantly, figure out which differences should actually influence your decision.

  • Yes.

Booking the cruise is definitely not the end of the planning.

Depending on the trip, we may still need to think about excursions, dining, beverage or Wi-Fi packages, transfers, travel protection, hotels, check-in, documentation, and plenty of other details.

I stay involved after booking and help you work through the decisions that come next.

Choosing the Right Cruise

  • No — and this is one of the biggest misconceptions in cruising.

There are plenty of excellent cruise lines, but the right one depends on what you want the trip to feel like. A family with active teenagers may be happiest on a completely different ship than a couple looking for a quieter, more relaxed onboard experience.

I don’t start with a favorite cruise line. I start with what matters to you, then look at which options make the most sense.

  • I start by listening.

I want to know who is traveling, what you’ve loved or hated about past vacations, how active you want to be, what matters most onboard, what kind of itinerary sounds exciting, where you’re comfortable spending more and where you’d rather not.

Then I can start comparing the cruise lines, ships, itineraries, cabins, and pricing that actually make sense for you.

I’d much rather give you a few strong options and explain why they work than send you a giant list of cruises and make you sort through them yourself.

  • Definitely not.

Sometimes spending more gets you things that genuinely improve the trip — more space, better inclusions, a smaller ship, stronger dining, a different level of service, or an itinerary that works much better for you.

Other times, you’re paying more for things you don’t particularly care about.

My job is to help you figure out whether the extra cost is actually buying something that matters to you.

  • This is where the details matter.

Two cruise lines can visit the same ports, have similar-looking cabins, and fall within the same general price range but still feel very different once you’re onboard.

Ship size, entertainment, dining, activities, service style, passenger mix, pace, and what’s included can all change the experience.

Instead of just comparing feature lists, we look at what those differences will actually mean for your vacation.

  • It depends on the trip.

If you have several sea days, the ship may be a huge part of the vacation. If you’re sailing a port-heavy Mediterranean itinerary and spending ten hours ashore most days, the itinerary may matter a lot more.

A newer or flashier ship isn’t automatically the better choice if the itinerary doesn’t give you the trip you want.

I look at the ship and itinerary together rather than assuming one always matters more.

  • The upgrade has to earn its price.

A balcony, suite, better location, or additional space can absolutely be worth paying for — especially if you’ll actually use and appreciate what comes with it.

But sometimes I’d rather see you keep the less expensive cabin and spend that money on a great excursion, extra days before the cruise, or another experience you’ll remember much more.

There isn’t one right answer for everyone.

Ocean, River & Cruise-Centered Travel

  • Yes.

And they are very different experiences.

Ocean cruises can range from huge activity-packed ships to smaller premium or luxury ships, so there’s enormous variety in what the vacation can feel like.

River cruising is usually much more destination-focused, with smaller ships, fewer passengers, and ports that put you right into cities and towns along the river.

I don’t think one is better than the other. They’re different tools for different trips.

Related Travel Insight: River vs. Ocean Cruising

  • Yes — and this is something I especially enjoy.

Sometimes that means several days exploring Athens, Rome, London, or another destination before boarding the ship.

Other times, it’s much simpler: choosing the right hotel, arriving early enough to protect the trip, arranging transportation, and making sure the beginning and end of the vacation don’t feel like an afterthought.

I like looking at the cruise as part of the whole journey, not as one reservation sitting in the middle of a bunch of unrelated logistics.

  • Yes, when they’re part of the trip we’re planning together.

For most fly-to-port cruises, the logistics around the sailing matter quite a bit. We need to think about when you arrive, where you stay, how you get from the airport to the hotel and then to the ship, and what happens when the cruise ends.

Those pieces should work together rather than being booked one at a time without looking at the bigger picture.

  • In most cases, if you’re flying to the port, I do not recommend flying in on embarkation day.

There are too many things you can’t control — delays, cancellations, missed connections, weather, luggage issues.

Exactly how early you should arrive depends on the trip. For some cruises, one night is plenty. For an international sailing, I may suggest arriving several days early and actually enjoying the embarkation city instead of treating that time as nothing but a safety buffer.

Groups & Multiple Travelers

  • Yes.

That might mean an extended family, a milestone birthday or anniversary, several couples traveling together, an affinity group, or another trip involving multiple cabins.

Group travel adds a layer of complexity because everyone may have different budgets, cabin preferences, schedules, and ideas of what makes a great vacation.

The goal isn’t to make everyone do exactly the same thing. It’s to create a trip that works well as a shared experience while still giving people room to travel in the way that suits them.
